Nora Mattress Review; Our Honest Opinion

One of my main aims when I started up this blog, was to write posts about things that I love, and that change the way we live… be it through aesthetic or function. Your surroundings have an effect on you; both physically and emotionally. That’s why I am very happy to be writing today’s post, which is sponsored by Wayfair.co.uk, introducing (and reviewing) the new Nora Mattress. I cannot emphasize ‘very happy’ enough. I’ll tell you why…

Just over a year ago, whilst laying the herringbone floor in the living room, I did my back in. For the best part of a fortnight, I could barely walk upright. After treatment, it started to ease and I started to look less neanderthal. However, I’ve had problems ever since and I can rarely get ‘comfortable’, as I once knew it. To compound this, I also developed sciatic pain. Our expensive new mattress, once nicknamed ‘the cloud’, was now too soft for my back and hips. I would wake constantly, if I could get to sleep at all. We returned to the cheapo mattress of old… which was firm, helped with the sciatic pain, but wasn’t comfortable. I’m sounding a bit like Goldilocks here, I know.

We knew we were needing to deal with the mattress issue, but we had no clue where to start. We had already tried a memory foam mattress topper to soften up our old one, but, as it turns out, I am in fact a human furnace at night. The intense heat between me + memory foam was almost worse than the back pain. Poor Brian eh?!

So, memory foam as an option, was out. Or so we thought.

The Nora Mattress From Wayfair

For those who don’t know, Wayfair.co.uk is one of the worlds largest online retailers of home furnishings and decor, offering a massive range of unique home products. From budget friendly to high-end style, Wayfair caters for every pocket and design style.

I’m quite traditional in many ways, and I’ve always preferred the ‘tried and tested’ over the ‘new and innovative’. So, when Wayfair.co.uk got in touch to review their latest product, I was slightly torn. The Nora mattress is one of their latest introductions to the UK market; the all new and affordable premium foam mattress in a box. Four layers of foam, provide an optimal balance of support and pressure relief while a cooling cover helps to regulate body heat better than other mattresses. It promises to give you the best quality sleep experience at the best value and also comes with a 100-night risk-free trial… All this, backed by Wayfair Uk’s commitment to customer service excellence. It has to be good, right?

But, can a foam mattress really be as good as a traditional sprung one?

The Nora Mattress; Preparation.

The Nora Mattress arrives, on your doorstep, boxed. I have to admit that I was very dubious of this concept. I couldn’t quite get my head around how a vacuum-packed mattress could give anywhere near as much support as a sprung mattress. Opening the box didn’t help. Bear-in-mind, this is a king-sized mattress. I’ve included the step-by-step images just to paint the picture.

Once on the bed and opened out, I carefully cut open the vacuum sealed packaging. I loved that bit!  Within a few minutes the Nora mattress had expanded and was indeed, king size. We didn’t sleep on it that night as the instructions recommend leaving it 12 hours to fully expand.

The first impression you get with a mattress, is by sitting on it. The gentle bounce you would do in the  bed store, still has to be done at home. It’s the law. The edge of bed bounce carried out prior to swinging your legs up to feel the full effect of it’s comfort.

There was no bounce. Brian was disappointed to say the least.

Neither of us having ever experienced a foam mattress before, we were both surprised by the density of it. The lack of spring (and springs!) was bizarre. However, the proof of the mattress is in the sleeping, so we decided to hold off judgment until the morning.

The Nora Mattress Review; The Big Sleep.

Fast forward one week. One week of sleeping on the most comfortable, sleep inducing mattress we have ever owned. One week, where I have had very little sciatic or back pain, and where I have been woken by discomfort or pain… zero times. Seriously, I kid you not.

The dense foam mattress that gives a disappointing lack of ‘bounce’, holds and supports your form so comfortably through the night, and really does offer the pressure relief that it claims. The cooling surface cover does exactly what it says, and has kept this human furnace from over heating on some pretty warm nights. Brian, who likes his comfort, is in full agreement. Whole new levels of comfortable have been discovered, for us both.

For someone who has had a disrupted sleep pattern for the best part of a year, this mattress is a pretty big deal. To go to bed knowing that I’m going to be comfortable, is huge. To wake up without pain… is unreal.

I have to admit, and I hold my hands up; I genuinely didn’t believe that we would find the Nora Mattress as comfortable as we have. It promised to deliver ‘the best quality sleep experience’ and it has absolutely delivered. I love you Nora

No, I REALLY love you.

  1. Hi Malcolm, I’m hopping over from your newsletter. This is really interesting. I just checked the price and it’s very reasonable. In our new loft room it’s all I’ll Farrow & Ball paint, luxe carpet and then a mattress with a spring coming through – on my side! I need to get looking for a new one and will definitely add this one into the mix. Thanks for sharing.
