Re-imagined Classics. Bringing Back Iconic IKEA Products.

Hey folks! First up, this is a paid post, working with IKEA. Why? Because I love them, that’s why.

As I have just made you all aware, I. Love. IKEA. I love the full experience of an IKEA day out (yes, we actually make it a day out) and everything that goes with it. We start off with a list and end up with double what was on it, with a meatball stop mid-way. Brian never complains, because he loves it as much as I do. We are that couple. So, when IKEA got in contact to ask if I would like to be involved with their re-imagined classics campaign, I jumped at the chance. IKEA classics, brought back to life? I’m all for that.

A Bit About IKEA

We can’t talk about the classics, without a little history class. IKEA was founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, a 17 year old entrepreneur who used money gifted by his father to start his own company. Selling small items locally to begin with, it soon outgrew itself and in 1945 became a mail order company. It wasn’t until 1948 that IKEA began to sell furniture, and in 1956 it launched it’s first self-assembly piece: the LÖVET table (see below). This launched IKEA into the brand that we know today and in 2018 we get to celebrate it’s 75th birthday.

Happy birthday IKEA! You’re looking amazing for your age!

IKEA Re-imagined Classics

To celebrate their three quarter Century anniversary, IKEA have relaunched a number of their most popular and iconic designs covering three decades: 50’s-60’s, 70’s-80’s, and 90’s-00’s. The first to launch is this gorgeous capsule collection from the 1950’s and 1960’s and it’s the one that I love the most. For me, mid century style is one of the coolest and easiest to mix into any home. Simple, beautiful styling paired with the functionality that we have grown to expect from IKEA, make these timeless classics something that you will hold on to for years. The original LÖVET table, now renamed LÖVBACKEN, has already been tipped to be an antique of the future. I may have to invest in this one myself.

This beautiful collection consists of a range of twelve different products, eight of which are pictured above. My personal favourites are:

BJURÅN Chair

A timeless bentwood style in dark stained beech. This chair could fit into any style of space effortlessly and would always look stylish.

SKOVEN Rug

This high pile rug is totally retro and although admittedly won’t fit into every space, it would make a massive statement in a living room or bedroom.

STRANDMON Chair

Originally launched in 1951 and featured on the cover of the first IKEA catalogue, the Strandmon, was formerly known as the MK chair. Sixty one years later it has been updated with contemporary fabric but still retains it’s comfortable, durable and timeless style (I can vouch for that). Albeit a temporary position for now (I have a plan for it’s permanent position) I’ve been lucky enough to be able to style up this beauty in my own home, complete with matching footstool. Check out more of my efforts below.

This is the Strandmon in Vellinge blue, which provides a beautiful contrast with the dark grey walls and warmth of the vintage rug. The formal style of a traditional wingback has been softened with beautiful angles and tapered legs. This helps to tie together the Victorian architecture of the room and the mid-century furniture and accessories. It’s a lovely piece to transition between styles, making it a timeless design that could fit in anywhere.

  1. Oh how I wish we had an IKEA store here in South Africa. I swear I would do my nut with all the gorgeous stuff that you play with and ad you own decor touches too. Ahhhh well maybe one day they’ll hit our shores and I’ll be first in line 😉

  2. I. Love. IKEA. Too !
And being Swedish I grew up going to IKEA with my mum on a regular basis and my daughters have grown up doing the same with me…(we’re still doing it and we always make a day out of it!)
    Also…I. Love. Your. Blog!

  3. Love Ikea’s stuff! Completely agree with you about the bentwood chairs. And I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a couple of EKENÄSET chairs myself.

The one gripe (if you can call it that) I have about Ikea is their discontinuation of things: I don’t always agree with new lines they bring out, especially if it means eliminating a line I value. (Not that they ever consult me about these things, lol.)

Glad to see they did a sponsored post with you – I enjoyed reading your take on Things Ikea. 🙂

  4. I love the Strandmon chair, and bought one last year in turquoise, but now they have a dark green velvet version and I really, really want that one instead, but can’t justify getting rid of the first one, and spending money on a new one! There’s no room in the rest of the house to put it, otherwise I’d do that.

I love Ikea, and a trip to Ikea is always exciting!

  5. It ok you are always up front about the products you love. Your followers completely get it. Plus you have great taste!
