Yes, I know! I’m DesignSixtyNine and you probably already know it’s my guest room reveal… It just sounds like much more of an entrance to give it the full title. I like to be fancy sometimes.
As part of Revamp, Restyle, Reveal, all ten participants are taking part in a ‘blog hop’, linking each blogger together so that you can easily follow all ten makeovers. Isn’t that clever of us?! So, if you’ve found your way here via Katty’s blog (thank you Katty!), then ‘hiya and welcome’. Isn’t it such an amazing/original/gorgeous transformation!
Just to let you know, this post contains sponsored product mentions throughout as part of the RRR challenge.
I can hardly believe that our four week challenge is over! It’s even harder to believe that I actually managed it! Yay! An unbelievable amount of work has been undertaken, not just by me, but by everyone involved. The results are superb all round.
Guest Room Reveal; ‘Before’
To get the full effect of the room ‘before’, click here to see my previous post. The guest bedroom has basically been a dumping ground since the day I moved in. Guests have come and gone, each time fitting in between the stored boxes and furniture. Enough was enough. We needed a room that didn’t require an apology before entering. Or a tetanus after leaving.
You’re hoping I kept the carpet, aren’t you?…
Ew, right?
The Guest Room Reveal
Just a wee change then…
Guest room reveal; Colour
Being a man who loves grey, opting for colour in here was a big deal. We really wanted something vibrant… but we were aware it was a risky move for us. I’m fickle remember. However, we went for it and we LOVE it. Earthborn paint, one of the RRR sponsors produce environmentally friendly products. We went for clay paint in ‘Polka Dot’. A fantastic base for the rest of the room.
The majority of the furniture in the room is second hand. The wardrobe was one of our first finds ‘together’ and it was love at first sight. Brian took this on as his own project and refinished it beautifully, continuing our quest for colour, on the inside. This colour was pretty much a match to the hand blocked paper that originally lined the piece (which was mouldy and torn).
Additional colour has been brought in through some beautiful new accessories. Sainsbury’s home has a great selection in store and online at the moment. These vases are the most lovely shade of green and have such a cool texture. I also went for the Jasmine and Pineapple flower candles (see pic below) because of the colour… then fell for the scent, so got the diffuser too. The grey glass carafe on the bedside table is also Sainsbury’s. I love the simple styling.
This cabinet was a charity shop find, customised with a hand painted scene.
A great way to introduce colour is through use of fabrics. Our sponsors, Harlequin and Style library have a huge selection, which I struggled to narrow down. I made a Roman blind and the cushions on the bed from their Moriko (chartreuse) and Extravagance fabrics. Just don’t look too closely at my sewing!
Also on the bed, you won’t have failed to notice the stunning Atlas throw, courtesy of Christy. It is massive and is the perfect size to drape over a king sized bed. The texture is so luxurious too.
The Epoch bed linen, also from Christy is by far the softest I have ever felt. I love crisp clean white sheets. This range is total luxury. I will admit to clambering under these immediately after the photos were taken. I can confirm; luxury.
The one big new furniture addition in the room is the double chest of drawers from Maisons Du Monde. The Tennessee recycled wood 6- drawer double chest is a beautiful contrast to the more ornate furniture in the room. The amazing texture and colour of the reclaimed wood really ties the red tones of the mahogany wardrobe to the cooler tones of the bedside table. This is gonna hold a heck of a load of stuff!
In the corner to the right of the drawer unit, I’ve set up a little seating area. A charity shop chair is updated with this funky retro Asmita cushion in Paprika and is lit by the elegant Phineus marble base floor lamp, both courtesy of The Cotswold company, another RRR sponsor. The plan was always to reupholster this chair, but we actually really like it as is… for now.
Okay, so I may need to give the pipes a second coat of paint, but how great does this radiator look, from Soak.com. It makes such a difference to the room. This is the Earl Grey triple panel radiator which we fully intend to use elsewhere in the house.
This Stowe Opal Glass Pendant is my ultimate ceiling light. It’s so pretty!! It’s that little bit ‘victorian schoolhouse’ look that I love. I had previously tried to create a similar look in the main bedroom… but it’s nowhere near as elegant as this David Hunt Lighting beauty.
(btw, isn’t it crazy how different the wall colour looks in each pic?!)
I know what a lot of you will be thinking… why would you need an air purifying, cooling fan in aberdeen? Well, the reason is that this bedroom is West facing and gets boiling hot in the evenings. We’ve already put this to good use and can say that it is brilliant. This Dyson Pure Cool Desk air Purifier from our headline sponsor, AO, runs pretty much silently as it has a night function and has really proven its worth on some of the warmer nights.
The final piece of pretty in the room is my long sought after Roberts Revival Radio. It. Is. Beautiful. In duck egg blue and gold, it is the perfect accessory for this room. Also from AO, our headline sponsor.
So, that’s Revamp, Restyle, Reveal over for another year! It has been an absolute privilege to be asked to take part, and to work alongside (virtually, of course) the loveliest group of people who have all performed miracles in their homes. I hope you’ve all enjoyed following along.
If you want a video tour, and to see my tired, daft face, then click the link below.
Now that you’ve caught up here, hop over to Lust Living to see the lovely Olivia’s beautiful living room makeover. It’s stunning! For the full list of bloggers, and links, check out the list at the bottom. I’m away for a nice long sit down.
See ya soon! Mal x

I’ve just stumbled across your Instagram and, wow, what a beautiful home you’ve created! I’m not sure if you still read comments on old posts, but if you do, could you tell me where you bought the gold bed from please? I love it!
Hi Amy,thank you so much. The bed was purchased locally a few years ago and I gold leafed it myself
I’ve just stumbled across your Instagram and, wow, what a beautiful home you’ve created! I’m not sure if you still read comments on old posts, but if you do, could you tell me where you bought the gold bed from? I love it!
Great bedroom Malcolm
Where the bed comes from?
You’ve created the coolest “hotel chic” bedroom! It’s true the colour of the walls seems to change like magic in every pic. I can’t believe this is the same box room I saw in your first RRR video. What a transformation!
Oh my this room is just gorgeous!! I love everything. Where did you get that cute table with the wooden top and metal base and the wall lights please? Well done on a fantastic makeover and I’m looking forward to seeing all the other bloggers RRRs now 🙂
Thank you! The table was from ‘The Range’, the wall lights were a DIY, which will be in a post soon. 🙂
Ohh thanks Malcolm, I look forward to that post!!
Did you use the claypaint on the woodwork as well, or the eggshell?
I went for eggshell on the woodwork.
This is absolutely beautiful. I actually did an ‘oh, wow’ when I saw the first reveal pic. The colour is gorgeous and all the finishing touches really elevate it. I’d want this for my main bedroom not for guests!
Thank you so much for such a lovely comment! We have since moved into this room 😀 x
What an amazing job!! The room is simply gorgeous. Packing my bags for a stay RIGHT NOW. 😉 xx
Aw thank you so much Kimberley! I’ll get the kettle on right away! 😀 xx
Good work, Malcolm and team! Such a great shade of blue – an excellent foil for the dark wood, the opalescent light fixtures, the bed linen, the charity chair….pretty much perfect. I’m a bit scared of colour, (having lived with 90s brights for way too long) but I’m filing away Brian’s wardrobe interior look for future reference – I have a similar wardrobe that currently looks a bit bleh on the inside. Loving your blog and looking forward to your next project already :~)
Thank you so much! It took a fair bit of bravery to take the plunge with the colour, but so glad we did. I’ve done brights before and it was strange to go back. Delighted we did now. 🙂
This is beautiful, I love it. That blue is just perfect and I love the colour pop inside the wardrobe ♥️
Thank you so much! The colour is a total change for us but so glad we went with it. x
Lovely.
thank you 🙂
That looks amazing, love the whole room.
I love your idea to just paint inside the wardrobe, I will be pinching that idea for future, furniture up-cycles.
Thank you! 🙂 I think we will be doing some more brights on the inside of furniture. It’s lovely to see that shot of colour when you open it up.
Great room, I have read all the RRR posts now and this is my favourite. Well played sir.
Thank you so much! That’s so lovely to hear 🙂
I love the way you have blended finds, old and new furniture and fab little accessories. You should feel proud of what you have created. Love it!
Paola
Thank you so much Paola! Really lovely message to read 🙂
What can I say? Your return guests will be thrilled! How the hell you did all this in 4 weeks astounds me. I love every single detail. The photos are also perfection. Another amazing room in the Malcolm house!!
Aw thank you so much Melanie! It was a hectic 4 weeks but it was made so much more fun with you guys. 🙂 x
I’m totally in awe of you, Malcolm. What a lot you’ve achieved in just 4 weeks, so so impressed! This bedroom is breathtaking! Every single detail is beautiful, the hand painted mural makes the cabinet look so special. Hey, we’re floor-lamp twins 🙂
We are floor lamp twins!! 😀 Thank you so much Meera, I’m so happy that you like it. Looking forward to stealing it as our own room X
what an amazing transformation. I adore the paint colours you have used and how you’ve elegantly tied in that stunning Harlequin fabric too. I’d be staying here a lot longer than a weekend if I was a guest! 🙂
aw thank you Jade! It was hit or miss part way through, but I’m so glad that I stuck with our choices. It helped having such a great RRR team x
I was so excited to see this finished, Malcolm! The colour palette is just amazing – what a incredible job. When can I come stay?!!!!
Aw thank you Katty! Likewise with yours…that wall!!! xx
Absolutely glorious. The colour and styling are stunningly sumptuous! Love it! So nice to see some colour in amongst all the grey!
Thank you so much 🙂
Love your room! Great job!!

Malcolm I absolutely LOVE IT! Such a beautiful colour and I still can’t get over how much you’ve achieved on your own in four weeks! Bravo! Xx

You amaze me Every time you have a reveal. I should know better by now that is what you do extremely well. Beautiful room, great color, fantastic design. You truly do have a gift for making a space elegant, comfortable, beautiful and the flow could not get any better!
Thank you so so much for such an amazing comment! I had my doubts part way through, as it is so different to what we are used to, but we are really pleased with the end results. 🙂
As always: A job well done. So tasteful and inviting.
Thank you so much for such a kind comment 🙂
Such a fabulous transformation Malcolm. I love how your gorgeous furniture pops against the Earthborn paint. I think this is one of my favourite Earthborn shades. I can’t believe you plastered the walls yourselves too, amazing work xx
Thank you so much Kerry! A few weeks of doing absolutely nothing beckons! xx
Love it – great re-do! My favorite feature is the mirrors in the (what I’d call it) reading corner.
Kasey
p.s. I confess, I’d reupholster the chair… but that’s just me. 😉
Thank you so much! I totally agree… the chair will definitely be getting done in time!
Gorgeous Mal! What an an amazing transformation in 4 weeks 🙂 x
Thank you so much Sharon. It certainly was a hectic 4 weeks! x
Well, isn’t that just gorgeous?! You have put in so much hard work into this room and it is SO worth it. I love the blue tones with the warmer wood tones – perfect! Your guests will be sooo happy to stay in that lovely space. Now, please go and get an alcoholic drink and have a well deserved rest! 🙂
Thank you so much Angela! I certainly had a restful weekend after the last 4 weeks! 🙂
