I have a confession. Although I do genuinely love each ‘thing’ I’ve chosen to show you this week, they aren’t all genuinely from ‘this week’. It all started well, with a charity shop find and a brand new art work… then I got the flu. Not the ‘man flu’, but real flu. So, this week, I have selected a few of my favourite finds from over the years (as well as a couple of recent ones) so as not to let you lovely readers down. Sadly, there are no projects to share as I have done nothing. So grab a hot drink, get yourself comfy and hold your laptop or mobile at least a metre away, so as not to catch this bug. Enjoy!
The Girl With the Day-glow Scarf
Both Brian and I are huge fans of vintage prints. Particularly, slightly formal looking ones that feature historic interiors, vintage ladies and archways. If we can get them all in one then it’s a bonus. If we can get them for a fiver, even better! What I particularly love about this one is the vibrant shade of both the scarf and dress against the formal backdrop. This is a print of ‘The Sampler’ by Leonard Campbell Taylor. I want to re-frame this with a slim white frame and a big mount. It will definitely be making it’s way onto the stair gallery wall (version 2) very soon.
Talking of Walls…
With Summer still an age away, this blast from the past certainly warms me up. I took this photograph whilst in Barcelona in 2010. It is one of my favourite images from an amazingly beautiful and inspiring city. I just love how it gives a glimpse of many interiors past, all on one giant canvas. The time (and weather) faded colours are so beautiful. Who lived here? What did they do? Who picked the wallpaper? So many questions!
Unexpected Pattern Inspiration
I had to follow the Barcelona wall with this image that I took a few years back. The mix of patterns and soft colour palette reminded me of those beautiful faded wallpapers… but can you guess where they’re from?
For those of you who choose to ignore your bills, you really are missing out. Honestly! Next time, take a peek at the inside of your envelope. Ignore the bill if you want… just look at the envelope. They’re beautiful. These would make fab fabric patterns. I do hoard some weird things.
Parisienne Plate
I’m not being fancy, that’s its name. I bought this from a charity shop about 10 years ago and only rediscovered it late last year, in a box of random crap in the attic. The 1950’s styling is gorgeous and will sit beautifully with my old Woolworths Homemaker plates. It’s by Alfred Meakin and writing this post has just sent me on an eBay quest which can only end in one thing… more Meakin.
Back Home To Wick
This absolutely brilliant print makes me so happy. I grew up in a tiny Hamlet just outside of Wick, in the far North East of Scotland… so it is essentially my hometown. Like in many small Scottish towns, our souvenirs are all aimed at tourists. Obviously. However, I don’t love tartan, I’m not a fan of thistles, and I have no reason to display a pair of Scotty dogs anywhere. I will be displaying these though…
Based in Wick, Elimac has a range of Wick based illustrations that are WAY cooler than any souvenir. In fact, don’t even call them that. What makes this print so special to me, is that the super talented artist behind Elimac, is my lovely cousin Elisa. So proud to have a piece of her work on my wall. To see more, check out the Elimac website here.
These remind me of vintage railway posters but with a contemporary twist. I cannot wait to get mine framed.
Take Care, keep well, catch up soon xx
That’s so true about everything coming around again! That’s a great idea about the charity shop. I did post a view of the salvage yard in one of my last posts but some charity shop images would be cool!
Really enjoy the tour of the prints ‘n’ photos, Malcolm! Every now and then, what would you think about taking a pic in one of the charity shops? Not their shop sign or anything, just maybe a busy section that you guys are mining for a find? 😀
p.s. I enlarged the Barcelona wallpaper photo just to see the designs in more details. No idea how old they might be, but I noticed that quite a few of the patterns are “New!” in some of the decorating / DIY shops. Everything old is new again, lol…
