In a world where everything has gone SO WEIRD, what we need is a bit of normality. So, escape the madness (and in some cases, monotony) and get lost in the five things that I’ve loved this week. Funnily enough, I haven’t found it hard to distract myself with pretty things this week…
German Pottery Vase
I spotted this vase in a pop-up charity shop window on my way to work on Tuesday. I literally ran back at 10am to get it before someone else picked it up. I ran… in public. I’m that committed folks. This is a 1960s German Hohr Sgraffitto Pottery vase, signed by Ges Gesch. It cost £4, which is a total bargain.
Picture Light
Remember the old stair window? Well since it has gone, we’ve been left with an ‘alcove’ of sorts, in which we plan to hang some artwork. To make it that little more special, we wanted it to be lit. I mean with lights, not in the urban dictionary sense of the word.
We didn’t have to ponder too long over this fab lamp from Direct Trade Supplies. We loved it the second I clicked on it. This is the Searchlight LED Picture Light in black brushed gold. It’s a good size at 51cm so should give a nice even glow to larger artwork. Now I need to make some art.
Jessica Alba’s Living Room
I spotted this room on Architectural Digest ages ago and it reappeared on my Pinterest feed yesterday. I bloomin’ LOVED this room the minute I saw it. I love the neutral palette with the teeny-tiny pop of turquoise on the stool and bowl (and books!), the shearling covered armchairs, the huge black painted cabinet and the sheer luxury of oversized everything. Every home should have a tree. I want an inside-tree.
This Room
A world away from Jessica Alba’s home but we aren’t too far away from the finish line. By finish line, I mean ‘by no means finished, finish line’. The finish line, is where I pick up the baton and start decorating. I cannot wait. Of course this all depends on whether or not we end up on lockdown, I may have to wait a while. We still have no French doors and this view is from the boarded-up hole where the French doors should be, looking into the kitchen. It looks so much wider from this angle. It also looks like a stage set.
H&M Pleated Shade Table Lamp
In my first ‘Five Things’ post, I declared my love for the conical (or coolie) shade (here). Now H&M has pushed me over the edge with this little pleated number. I would like to say that I have always loved a pleated shade but that would be a lie. I’ve no idea where this love has come from… maybe it’s the combination of the shallow slope of the shade with the angular base? Or the cute little ball finial? Perhaps it’s the 80’s vibe that’s making my eyes go all heart shaped…
Whatever the reasons, they don’t matter. I’M NOT BUYING IT BECAUSE I AM SKINT AND THIS COSTS £69.99!! Still want it though.
I hope you’re all keeping well and safe. Have a great weekend, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing. xx
Hi Malcolm,
You did a fabulous chalk-painted Ikea piece side-table?…it has 3 drawers on top and 5 vertical drawers? on bottom and the top looks brown……the colors you used were Napoleonic Blue, Aubusson Blue and Florence. I want to copy this paint technique and color, but want to ask you HOW did you mix these paints? Were they layered on top of each other? appreciate your help! Hope you are staying healthy.
Marie in the USA
Hi Marie,
All well here, I really hope you and your loved ones are too.
Here is the link to the piece you are talking about:

I painted each component in one of the shades then used a fairly dry brush to roughly coat each part, building the colours up in layers. I hope this helps. 😀
Malcolm xx
I am obsessed with indoor trees.
Me too now! I got stuck in a Pinterest loop searching for them 😂
